  Before Census Tracts. Census Tracts were invented in and were only applied to a very few metropolitan areas. Their use has grown over time, and only with the census was every square inch of the United States put into census tracts. Prior to census tracts, very limited information was provided by city "Wards". Paper or fiche maps of census areas such as blocks, block groups, tracts and metropolitan areas are available at the MSU Libraries for the following years: Up to Maps are within or next to the related statistics volumes in the MSU Main Library, Census Alcove.

  The Census ships the population data with the map shapefile. When we import the shapefile into a SAS map dataset, the population is repeated with every x/y point of every polygon. We only need 1 population value for each Census block, therefore I use . The map sheet size is 36 by 32 inches. Each set of census tract reference maps is accompanied by a Census Tract to Map Sheet relationship file. These semi-colon delimited text files include a record for each census tract within the county, consisting of the code and name of the tract, and a list of all map sheet numbers that the tract appears on.

It is important to note that these PDF maps are re-creations of the Census Tract/BNA outline maps and differ from the original Census Tract Outline Maps.

Census - Census Tract Outline Maps. Component ID: #ti These maps show the boundaries and numbers of the census tracts as well as Census Tract/BNA Outline Maps book named features underlying the boundaries. They also show the boundaries, names and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native/Hawaiian home land areas, counties, county subdivisions, and places.

Geography Reference Maps Maps that show the boundaries and names (or other identifiers) of geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates statistical data. In some cases, the name is only in the form of a geographic code, such as a census block number.

Additionally, beginning with the census, the BNA criteria were changed to make BNAs more comparable to census tracts. For the census, census tracts and BNAs together covered the entire nation, and all counties contained either census tracts or BNAs.

For Censusthe BNA concept was retired and census tracts were defined nationwide. Use the Census Tract Maps tool by entering a county name or state abbreviation to display a census tract overlaid on a map as well as demographic information related to the given census tract.

Select the desired FIPS code and click to view tract names. Click census tract name to view map. The System also provides Census demographic information about a particular census tract, including income, population, and housing data.
